You’ve decided you want to fly your own private jet and you want to know how to do it. Well you’ve come to the right place!

First let me tell you it’s absolutely possible. Second, it’s going to take a lot of work and a lot of money.

Because the speeds and altitudes are much greater, the FAA requires everyone who flies jets to complete specialized training for the jet they are plan to fly. This training, called a type rating covers the specific systems and procedures you’re going to need to know as a private jet pilot.

Unless you want to fly with a copilot, you’re also going to need to choose a jet that is designed to be flown single-pilot. Most single-pilot jets are more modern and use more automated systems to help you fly it among the airliners and corporate jets.

Before you start your jet training, you’re going to need to get your private pilot license. While you can train in almost any airplane, I recommend that you look for a flight school that offers training in a Cirrus. Cirrus make great aircraft, including a single-engine, single-pilot jet, which they designed to make transitioning from their other aircraft as easy as possible.

Once you get your private pilot license, you’re going to need to get an instrument rating to learn how to fly in clouds. An instrument rating is necessary for jets, since they fly at altitudes where filing and instrument flight plan is required.

Finally, you’re going to need to fly a lot. At this point, it’s not the FAA holding you back but your insurance company. You’re going to need to prove to them that you are experienced and capable before they set you free among the airliners in a fast and expensive airplane.

Flying your own jet is a dream of many pilots, and its essential to have a plan in place that will help you get there.
